“Lieutenant,” Captain Nikane greets, a hardness in her voice that isn’t for him. “You have the best Palici between us, I believe?”

“If I wanted a beast on me,” the prisoner says in perfect Gealenn, “I would have fucked your horse instead of poisoning it.”

On the battlefront between two warring nations, an intruder is captured in an enemy camp. She's questioned.
